"Imigrantka" ["The Immigrant"]

chcę podzielić się z Wami filmem, który obejrzałam kilka dni temu w kinie: Imigrantka (reż. James Gray).

najpierw trailer i krótkie streszczenie: 

nie muszę pisać zbyt wiele, bo trailer dużo zdradza, a sama fabuła nie jest szczególnie skomplikowana. akcja toczy się w latach 20. w Stanach. dwie młode Polki, Ewa Cybulska (Marion Cotillard) i jej siostra Magda, przyjeżdżają do Ameryki. chora na gruźlicę Magda zostaje poddana kwarantannie na wyspie Ellis, a Ewa ma zostać deportowana, ponieważ jest samotną kobietą, a rodzina, którą podała w formularzu, nie przyjechała, by ją odebrać. wtedy jednak Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix) wydostaje ją z wyspy, przyjmuje ją pod swój dach i oferuje pracę w swoim teatrze o charakterze, rzekłabym, erotycznym. tam Ewa poznaje magika Orlando (Jeremy Renner), który zachowuje się jak lekkoduch i błazen, ale jest bardzo ciepłą i pozytywną osobą. jako że trailer pokazuje naprawdę dużo, pozwolę sobie jeszcze dodać, że Bruno i Orlando będą rywalizować o Ewę.

ocena:

wielka niespodzianka dla nas, Polaków: dużo dialogów po polsku! ogromne brawa dla Marion Cotillard i innych aktorów (wśród nich tylko jedna Polka). mówili oczywiście z akcentem, ale wyszło naprawdę zgrabnie.

film jest ładny - w sensie estetycznym, przypomina starą fotografię. nie mogę też nie wspomnieć o przepięknej Marion. fabuła jest nieskomplikowana, ale nie uznałabym tego za minus, bo to nie film akcji, nie potrzeba tu fajerwerków. prostota pozwala skupić się na sytuacji bohaterki. historia zgodnie z oczekiwaniami jest smutna, wzruszająca, mnie się całkiem podobała, ale to kwestia indywidualna. ogólnie rzecz ujmując, miło spędziłam czas. 

potem jednak przyszła mi do głowy pewna myśl: ten film w stu procentach potwierdza zachodnie stereotypy na temat Polaków. Polka wyjeżdża za granicę, szuka tam pracy, ląduje w półświatku przestępczym i kończy jako prostytutka. jest biedna, kradnie pieniądze. jest piękna (najpiękniejsza w całym filmie), mężczyźni ją uwielbiają i rywalizują o nią. jest bardzo religijna, modli się, chodzi do kościoła. najważniejsza jest dla niej rodzina, bo sprzedaje swoje ciało, by uzbierać pieniądze na nielegalne wwiezienie jej do Stanów. zdaję sobie sprawę, że być może takie były realia, ale widzę tu jeden wielki stereotyp.

w Internecie widzę głównie krytyczne opinie, średnia ocena na Filmwebie to 5.6/10, Internet nie poleca. ale ja będę ostrożniejsza w krytyce i powiem, że nie żałuję, że obejrzałam Imigrantkę.

I want to share with you my impressions of the film The Immigrant by James Gray.

first - the trailer and a short summary:

I don't have to write too much because the trailer reveals a lot and the story is not really complicated. the action of the film is set in the United States in the twenties. two young Poles, Ewa (Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda, come to America. Magda has to be in quarantine on the Ellis Island for some time because of tuberculosis, Ewa is liable to deportation because she's a single woman and her family in America hasn't shown up to pick her up. then Bruno Weiss (Joaquin Phoenix) gets her out of the island, takes her in and offers her a job in his theatre (an erotic one, I'd say). there Ewa meets Orlando the Magician (Jeremy Renner) who behaves like a happy-go-lucky person and a clown, but he's friendly, enthusiastic and optimistic. you have probably noticed it in the trailer, so I'll add that Bruno and Orlando are both interested in Ewa.

evaluation:

surprise: many dialogues in Polish! thunderous applause for Marion Cotillard and other actors (only one of them was Polish). of course they had foreign accents, but all in all they went well.

the film is pretty - I mean the aesthetics, it looks like an old photography. not to mention the beautiful Marion. the plot is not complicated, but I wouldn't consider it a disadvantage. it's not an action film, there's no need for fireworks, the simplicity helps us focus on the situation of the main character. the story is (as we can expect) sad and touching, I quite liked it, but it's a matter of taste. generally speaking, I had a good time watching it.

soon afterwards, a new thought crossed my mind: the film confirms the western stereotype of Poles. a young Polish woman goes abroad, she looks for a job, she ends up working as a prostitute. she's poor and steals money. she's beautiful (the most beaufitul woman in the film) and men fall for her. she's very religious, prays, goes to church. her family is so important to her that she sells her body to earn money and get her sister out of the Ellis Island. I understand that the realities may have looked like this, but I still see a stereotypical image of a Pole.

I can see mostly negative opinions on the Internet, the rating on IMDb is 6.6/10, the Internet doesn't approve of the film. I'll be cautious when it comes to criticising and I'll say that I don't regret having seen The Immigrant.
